Installing apps on your iTouch 2G

I know of two methods of doing this.

1. Using Installous / Appulous to install apps directly onto our iTouch from your iTouch
2. Downloading apps from online on your computer and using iTunes to install them on your iTouch

Using Installous / Appulous to install apps directly onto our iTouch from your iTouch

From Installous, you can search for an app on Appulous alphabetically, by newst, by latest update, or with a search function.

To use the search function, tap the search button at the top right of the Installous app, type in the desired app name the press ‘Search’.

A list of relevant apps should load, look for the one you want to download and tap it to bring up it’s Appulous app page.

Scroll to the bottom and look for ‘Download’. Sometimes there are multiple versions of the app. Usually you want to go with the latest one. Tap the version you wish to download.

A list of available mirrors for download will load. Choose one under the category “iPod-friendly links”

Look for the download button and press it

An option to download or install the app will appear, choose install.

A download progress bar will appear.

after it is done downloading, an install log will pop up and show the progress of the installation

Once the installation is complete you can find it on your homepage.

Downloading apps from online on your computer and using iTunes to install them on your iTouch

First download the app and open it with iTunes.

The app will appear in the ‘Applications’ section of iTunes.

Plug your iTouch into your computer and hit the ‘Sync’ button on the Summary page of your iTouch in iTunes.

iTunes will begin installing the app on your iTouch and you are finished!

Using Cydia to install MobileInstaller and Installous on your iTouch 2g

After jailbreaking your iPhone with QuickFreedom you should have two new default applications on your iTouch home: Cydia and Installer.

From Wikipedia:
“Cydia [sih-DEE-uh] is a package installer/manager for the iPhone and iPod Touch, created and maintained by Jay Freeman (saurik), which allows users to browse and download applications from a range of sources. Most applications are available to download for free, with some requiring purchase after downloading, and as of the 1.0.2790-44 release, applications are available to purchase from within the application. The applications are downloaded directly to iPhone or iPod Touch and are located in the /Applications/ directory , in the same place where “Apple native” applications are located. App Store applications are located in /var/mobile/Applications/”

The first thing you want to do is add two certain package sources to Cydia

To do this, open Cydia and touch ‘Mange’ at the bottom. Then Click ‘Sources’.

From the sources menu touch ‘Edit’ at the top-right and then ‘Add’ to the top-left then add the following addresses individually:
http://cydia.hackulo.us/
http://iphone.org/hk/apt/

Then tap ‘Home’ on the bottom and reload Cydia if it hasn’t already.

Next you will want to install the latest version of ‘MobileInstaller’. Mobile Installer allows installation of home-made homebrew IPAs.

To do this, click search on the bottom of Cydia and in the search bar type ‘mobileinstaller’ and install either one of these by tapping them and clicking install on the top right.

A log will appear showing the installation progress. once it is done installing it will instruct you to restart your iTouch. Do so.

You now have the ability to install .IPA (iPhone) files on your iTouch.

Next you will want to install an app browser. I use Appulous.

Appulous is browsable on your iTouch via Installous. Both are from the website Hackulous.

Touch ’search’ on Cydia and type in ‘Installous’ to find this package and install it:

1/3 Jailbreaking your iTouch2g

“A jailbreak is the act of bypassing software restrictions in certain computer operating systems, more specifically in Unix-like operating systems. It is used to increase user freedom. In the context of the iPhone, it allows the user to run unofficial code, bypassing Apple’s official distribution mechanism (which distributes approved applications through the App Store).

The iPhone and iPod Touch have repeatedly been subject to jailbreaks, allowing the use of unofficial code, but have frequently had those jailbreaks disabled by updates to the iPhone OS.

Once jailbroken, iPhone users are able to download many applications previously unavailable through the App Store via unofficial installers such as Cydia. Through these applications, one can download software to change numerous aspects of the iPhone or iPod Touch, such as changing the theme, installing a new font, etc. Jailbreaking iPhones also allows for the free installation of official Applications via .torrent, including paid apps.

Jailbreaking is distinct from unlocking, which is the process by which a mobile device is made compatible with telephone networks it was not specifically licensed to be used with.”

So far as of today (4/28/09), the easiest application to use for jail breaking is QuickFreedom.

Install this and run it. The app should open up:

Click ‘Jailbreak iPod’ and you will see this screen, Step 1 - Requirements:

Unless you have already installed LIBUSB click ‘Install LIBUSB’ and it will download and install LIBUSB for you. LIBUSB is a library for use by user level applications to access USB devices regardless of OS.

During the installation your USB services will reset and some of your devices will go crazy for a second, but don’t panic, they will come back soon once the installation is complete. You may be asked to restart you computer, make sure you do so if it does.

Once LIBUSB is installed, QuickFreedom should recognize it and the X next to LIBUSB in QuickFreedom should turn into a green checkmark and read ‘LIBUSB - Installed’

The next step is to upload the original iTouch 2.2.1 firmware>. If you do not have it, click the download button in Quickfreedom.

It will open up a download of the original iTouch 2.2.1 firmware in your default browser.

Save it somewhere. Once it is done downloading, click ‘Browse’ in QuickFreedom and navigate to where you saved the original iTouch 2.2.1 firmware you downloaded and open it up.

QuickFreedom will start copying the original firmware to itself:

Once these steps are done, you should have two green check marks on the ‘Step 1 - Requirements’ page of QuickFreedom. Once you do, you can click ‘Next’

You will be taken to the next screen: Step 2 - Create Firmware:

From here you can change your boot logo by clicking the ‘Use Custom Logo’ check box or the ‘Change’ button. Either will bring up the custom logos window where you can change your DFU (recovery mode) logo and your boot logo. To do so, click the logo you want changed to under the appropriate tab and hit the OK button. You can also use custom logos (they must be in .PNG format and 320×480px) by clicking the ‘Use Custom’ button under the appropriate tab and uploading the desired .PNG file then hit OK.

Back to the Create Custom Firmware Screen.

Make sure that the ‘Install Installer’ checkbox is checked (and ‘Use Custom Logos’ if you changed it) then hit ‘Create Custom Firmware’ and QuickFreedom should start creating the custom firmware for your iTouch that you will be uploading to it later.

Within seconds it should get to ‘Starting Firmware Creation’ this part should take only a few seconds and move onto ‘Now creating, please wait…’ which should take less than 5 minutes.

Sometimes during the creation of the custom firmware, the process freezes and you have to cancel the process and click ‘Create Custom Firmware’ again to start it over.

Once the process is finished it will say something like ‘Successfully created firmware! Location: C:\Documents and Settings\tanj\Desktop\Custom Firmware.ipsw’. Once it does, click next to go to the next page: Step 3 - Pre-Jailbreak.

Plug your iTouch into your computer

During this step you must put your iTouch into DFU mode (restore mode).

To do so, power off your iTouch by holding the top button down till a slider appears that says ‘Slide to power off’, do so. Then hold both the top button and your front panel button down simultaneously for 10seconds, then let go of the top button while still holding down the front panel button down for another 10 seconds. This should put your iTouch into DFU mode and it will disappear from your iTunes momentarily and reappears as an iTouch in recovery mode.

Also once in DFU mode, QuickFreedom will also detect this and at the bottom of the QuickFreedom window on the status bar it will say ‘iPod connected in DFU mode’.

Once this is done click ‘Start Pre-Jailbreak’

And your QuickFreedom will start the pre-jailbreaking process on your iTouch. There is no turning back now.

Click Next once the pre-jailbreaking process is completed.

I will just repeat what it says on step 4:

Your iTouch’s screen should be white now. Open iTunes and click your iTouch.

In the general tab hold shift and click the ‘Restore’ button.

Find your custom firmware (it should be on your desktop) and hit OK.

Once completed your iTouch is now Jail Broken.

Since I’m going particularly nowhere with this let me just say that BBQ Chicken located in the University District of Seattle is not a family restaurant (even though every fucking sign inside says it is). Their soda fridges (which btw are on the pathway to the exit/entrance, not good if you are on the Ave) are lined with imported beer, After 9:00pm they dim the lights (I’m sure it’s because that’s when all the Koreans roll around and they know most Korean girls are ugly or nocturnal blood suckers), and they showcase all their cocktail glasses right behind the cash register, speaking of which let me show you their biggest one with one of my friends:

Every day I almost hit a pedetrian and it’s never my fault. I swear if I try to go one way the pedestrian walking makes an effort to jump in my way.

Pretty much saying bikers will try not to slow down. This plus the fact that pedestrians have the right of way will generally dictate that bikers will maintain same speed while avoiding pedestrians with quick turns or pre-planned paths.
